Hyundai GTL Groundbreaking Ceremony: Dome Projection in the Desert (2016)

In 2016, Hyundai Engineering marked the groundbreaking of its Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) facility in Türkmenistan with an unforgettable ceremony. Held in the vast desert, 80 kilometers from Ashgabat, this event showcased the intersection of advanced technology, innovative design, and seamless execution.

About the Project

This groundbreaking ceremony was designed to be more than just an event—it was a statement of Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and excellence. Our team was responsible for crafting the concept, architectural layouts, and design for the ceremony. The centerpiece of the project was the construction and setup of three domes, with the largest spanning an impressive 35 meters in diameter, situated on a 5,000 square meter concrete platform in the middle of the desert.

Event Highlights

  1. Dome Projection:

    • We produced captivating content for the dome projection, immersing the audience in Hyundai’s vision.

    • The projections utilized 27 HD projectors, delivering a total of 540,000 ANSI lumens of light output, ensuring vibrant visuals that stood out even in the challenging environment.

  2. International Collaboration:

    • An international team of 150 professionals came together to bring this event to life.

    • Despite extreme on-site conditions, including 50 degrees Celsius heat and strong desert winds, the team ensured flawless execution.

  3. Prestigious Attendance:

    • The ceremony was attended by several presidents and dignitaries, underscoring the significance of the event on both a regional and global scale.

Design and Execution

As the Technical Director for this project, I oversaw the entire technical implementation, ensuring that every detail met the highest standards. One of the key challenges we faced was the projection surface itself—a curved 36-meter dome. This was an unusual and complex setup for our team, as it required advanced projection mapping techniques and precise calibration to achieve seamless visuals on such a massive and unconventional surface.

Our team tackled a range of challenges to ensure the success of the event:

  • Desert Construction: Building three domes on a remote site required meticulous planning and resource management. The largest dome’s 35-meter diameter was a feat of engineering, especially on the unforgiving terrain.

  • Projection Technology: The use of 27 HD projectors with a combined output of 540,000 ANSI lumens ensured that the content was visible and impactful, even under harsh conditions.

  • Event Setup: The entire operation had to be carefully timed and executed, from constructing the domes to setting up the audio-visual equipment, all while battling extreme heat and wind.

Key Takeaways

This event demonstrated the power of creativity, technical expertise, and determination. It not only celebrated Hyundai Engineering’s GTL facility but also showcased the capabilities of our team to execute large-scale, high-stakes events in challenging environments. The Hyundai GTL groundbreaking ceremony stands as a testament to what can be achieved when innovation meets perseverance.
